The Green Guide to Cannabinoids
At Green, we’re proud to offer some of the most high-quality, accessible, and sustainably produced recreational cannabis products in Las Vegas. But we also want to do more. We’re still very much in the age of learning when it comes to cannabis— after all, it spent decades as a prohibited drug, and is still technically prohibited federally. Only recently has increased research allowed us to understand more about what makes cannabis…well, cannabis!
With that in mind, we want to help educate our customers about the cannabis products they’re putting into their bodies— and how they work in close partnership with your body to create incredible positive benefits.
Bear with us, we’re going to get a little bit science-y. We don’t want to bore our readers with a biology class, but we also are firm believers that the more you know about cannabis, the better you can customize your experience to your unique goals.
So, without further ado, let’s talk about cannabinoids.
What are cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that occur in nature — for example, within cannabis plants. There are over 100 unique types of cannabinoids, each with its own name that you’ll usually see as an acronym. CBD and THC are just two of these, and definitely the most popular. But there are others that appear often in cannabis products— CBG, CBN, THCa, THCv, and many more.
Each of these cannabinoids is being studied more and more by researchers to reveal that they all have their own amazing benefits to provide, both when it comes to recreational use and in treating medical issues and concerns.
The way these cannabinoids interact with your body to produce their effects has to do with something within your body known as your endocannabinoid system.
The Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is a system inside your body that connects the brain and nervous system. Think of it as a series of receivers, and these receivers connect with natural compounds in your body called endocannabinoids. If this sounds similar to cannabinoids, that’s because they are! Endo- is simply a latin prefix meaning ‘inside.’ These ‘cannabinoids inside the body’ connect to receivers and tell your body and brain to do things.
When you use cannabis, the cannabinoids inside bind with those very same receptors and send even more powerful signals than your endocannabinoid system. It’s like taking a multivitamin— your body already has some of those vitamins, but you’re giving it a more concentrated dose.
Some cannabinoids, like THC, send signals to the brain to release chemicals that cause feelings of euphoria— this is what makes you high. Others, like CBD, send signals to reduce inflammation, soothe pain, and improve sleep. That’s what makes CBD such a great medicinal cannabinoid.
The Entourage Effect
When multiple cannabinoids interact, we call it the entourage effect. This is a very powerful effect that can behave in surprising ways. For example, combining some cannabinoids with others in small amounts actually reduces their effects, while combining them in large amounts enhances those same effects. To benefit from the entourage effect, you should safely experiment with cannabis products that feature two or more cannabinoids.
